Duuuude!!! I know almost nothing about Wheel of Time but I went out of state to stay with a friend for the holidays and they're big fans of the show. I only saw one episode and the couple in the pic? It was when she followed him and got to know his family. I was so into them! I might have to actually watch the show now.

Alright, I'm gonna watch this show
Thanks OP.

Not into the ship because I didn't really like her all that much (I think it may have been the actress wasn't quite good enough to sell it) but Lan. Mmm, he is painfully attractive. I was Here for it.

Yes, same. I like him, but she was my least favourite character in the entire show and their relationship did not interest me at all.

ayrt. Yeah, I tried being neutral to her at least but she made it so hard to do even that. There were moments where the script was clearly 'Ah yes, she will now emote and we will get some character development' but it was a nope every time by the actress. Instead of believing she was a complex person with reasons, she came off as flat. At best she was constantly sullen and stupidly, irrationally contrarian. Their 'relationship' ended up being so one sided that I couldn't buy into it at all. Like we see like all of 10 minutes of Moiraine's relationship and yeah, totally bought it. But we have episodes building up Nyneave and Lan and I did not buy it for a second.

Actually her relationship with any of them. Even when she meets back up with the others, they are all supposed to be happy and relieved to be reunited but if they hadn't said this aloud, I would have thought they didn't even like each other.

Big problem with that series is that most of the five just weren't good enough actors to pull off the more complex emotions of the show(I thought Mat did a really good job but I heard they replaced the actor after the first season). They have some fantastic actors surrounding them but the main characters have to do Some of the work. The dude who plays Rand, total block of wood. At the season climax, the Big Bad was there dragging that whole ending scene by himself because Rand was giving nothing face the Entire time. Huge climax, a deep, terrible, torturous decision to be made, and his face was Exactly the same as in all the previous episodes.

Anyways, I apparently have been thinking about this way more than I realized.

I recently started rereading WoT (it's been decades), and one thing that I noticed was that Rand doesn't really get much of a personality in the first book. He spends 90% of the book inner monologging generically about his worries and the plot so far. He does this a lot. Perrin and Mat get so much more actual character development than he does. Hell, Moiraine spends most of that book being ominous and mysterious and she gets more character development than Rand.

ayrt. Agreed book-wise. I remember stopping because I thought he was pretty boring. But the show would be the place to fix that. They have to find a way to get the audience to believe these characters because right now, I really only care about Moiraine and Lan. End of list.

I think some of it is that script doesn't have a lot of moments to let the characters breath. But even when they do, the young actors can't seem to take it. Like, Rand with the barmaid. I belived that Barmaid. Rand... not so much.

DA but her being so stubbornly, at times stupidly, contrarian was one of the things that made me like the character, I think. She was pissed about this particular situation beyond the rationality she was meant to have, and I guess I saw that ad a fascinating obvious flaw and potential for growth rather than an accidental failure.

Compared to Rand, whose feelings on any particular matter varied so wildly episode to episode that I pegged him for the Dragon just by the fact that he had no apparent or consistent characterization otherwise, unlike the other four.

ayrt. I mean, I watched to whole season so I'm willing to continue to give her a shot but I could get what they wanted me to think about her through the dialog but I just didn't buy a lot of her interactions with the other characters.

Haha! I had vaguely remembered him being the Dragon from the books but by episode three I knew it had to be him because he had nothing else going on.

DA

The stubbornly contrarian, sometimes-self-defeating nature of it is very much an aspect of book!Nynaeve. So it's a faithful adaptation there.

AYRT oh good!

(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, I loved Nynaeve! She is deeply suspicious of Moraine because of how her mentor was treated by the White Tower, she manages to track and sneak up on Lan, she responds well to him treating her with respect and asking for her help and considerably less well to the red Aes Sedai trying to wheedle information out of her. And she was way more relaxed around the guards than the Aes Sedai, which I think says a lot about how she sees herself and the Aes Sedai in general.

But yeah, either the actor playing Rand is dull or they're not giving him much to do, because he was very unconvincing even in that one scene with the Big Bad where he should have been showing emotions all over the place.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-04 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt. See, for me, there was a lot of telling and very little showing. Like when she hung out with the the guards, I believe Lan (or someone) mentions that she's been spending every night chilling with them to Moiraine and they exchange meaningful looks about it. That's how I knew Nynaeve liked the guards, not really by anything she did or said during her time actually with them.

And Moiraine and Lan talking about her furthered the romantic relationship with Lan way more than any of their interactions did. Though Lan served her some amazing eyes. I could sort of see it when she followed him home but I also read the tension there as less 'I like this guy' more 'I trust no one so Imma creep around'.

Yeah, I just think after 8 episodes we should have a much better understanding of the characters and care about them much more. I don't know if they need to tighten the script, work on the acting, or what, but something needs to be improved.

Oh man, the casting was a m a z i n g.
