I don't think it's in bad taste or improper any more than changing a straight character gay. People can say those decisions aren't made in a vacuum all they want but shipping for me is purely hedonistic. If it scratches my fancy I'll do it and I couldn't give a shit to the wind what hand wringing people who think explicit text is up to interpretation when it's for their purposes think.

You can dislike it but I hate the hypocrisy of allowing things one way but not the other. In real life people experiment and learn new things about themselves and lots of people in fandom think this is fine when that exploration points towards things going in the same sex romance direction but balk when it also points in the opposite sex direction. Either people can write and explore whichever concepts they want in regards to characters sexuality and identity and different AU versions of them or they can't. Pick one.

This. I know someone who identified as gay for most of his life until he met his now-wife. It absolutely is a thing that can happen IRL because sexuality is fluid, people can have exceptions, etc. and there's nothing wrong with people writing about those experiences in fiction.

Hell, I didn't realize I was bi until I was nearly 30. Sexuality isn't always clear-cut and can change and evolve over the course of your life, why should it be any different in fiction?

I agree completely.
