Wheel of Time

(Anonymous) 2022-02-05 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So..... after watching the prime show, i am thinking of reading the books. Ordered book 1, havent started yet.
Checked Wikipedia.
What. the. hell. did. i. get. into.

Question is, are these books a slog like ASOIAF or are they smooth to read?

The first book is definitely a slog, but they get better after that.

First few books are decent but not amazing. Shadow Rising, Fires of Heaven and Lord of Chaos are absolutely phenomenal and about as good as epic fantasy ever gets. After that it gets kind of uneven - mostly still decent but there's two particular books (Path of Daggers and Crossroads of Twilight) that really are just a slog to get through.

We're reading the third book this month, and then catch-up next, so it'd be two books per month, if you think that's doable :)

I am a rather fast reader, so I'll see where i am next month! It'd be so cool to be part of a read along!!

I'm a pretty fast reader so back when they were still early in the series I got through the existing books fast and eagerly awaited the new ones. Eventually I got to one book where I was like 9/10 of the way through it and suddenly realized that... nothing had actually "happened", it was entirely people/factions maneuvering and preparing for stuff to happen.

And then the last chapter or so was all action and something really freaking huge happened and I was like :O Okay, I guess that works.

But if you are not a fast/avid reader... it might take awhile.

That's a good point. And I do think being a fast reader helps. I'm a fast reader too, so I can run through even a long book fairly decently. If you read slower these books will definitely take you a while.
