That doesn't mesh with my experience of the fandom at all. Yes, there were/are some people mostly interested in modern AUs, but not the majority of the fandom. And I just sorted by kudos on AO3 to make sure I wasn't misremembering, and of the top 20 fics, 19 are canon era (including one XMFC crossover) and one is a Regency AU.
