I'm sure there must be fandoms with more modern settings that contain the same elements they like in Les Mis. Maybe even ones where there aren't any old men characters and het ships to ignore and erase.

Name them, then

The only elements they seem to like are "young male characters who are friends" and "characters who care about a social justice issue," though I'm 100% certain that none of them have the slightest clue about the actual issues the June Rebellion happened over. Apart from that, including their concepts of the "young male characters who are friends," it's all random shit that really doesn't relate to the source material at all.

I used to be a very big reader of Regency romances and the devotees of the subgenre could be intense about any historical detail that was incorrect.

Wow, I just thought, "Oh, 200 years ago, with the bicentennial that's around the American revolution!"

But then I realized that was 200 years ago when I was 7, so.

What's the fandom? Is it Pushkin, Shelley, Poe?

Probably Les Mis.

This fans are shitty. Also that's why I am wary of modern AU's, lazy people disliking their own canon do not spark joy

I'm choosing to believe this is the Terror fandom!

People can enjoy fandom in their own way of course, I just wish they'd TAG their modern AUs on AO3 so I can avoid them.
