The BBC isn't a station, it's a network of at least seven TV channels and over 50 radio stations. It's the only news source that isn't swayed by commercial interests and doesn't shove advertising down its audience's throats. The Tories are freezing and potentially cutting the licence fee, which currently accounts for about three quarters of the BBC's income.

Sorry, that first part was my mistake. I did actually know that at some point, but I forgot that it was more than a station.

I stand by the rest of my comment.

Ok, but in that case you're clearly not from the UK and have little chance of fully understanding the nuances of our media landscape.

I don’t think it’s remotely in question whether I’m from the UK or not after my blunder. But I can still look things up, and have opinions about media landscapes in general(I can’t ever guarantee that they’d be GOOD ones).

But really, ignorance of someone who clearly doesn’t live in the UK aside, my main quibble is you saying the secret was “too political”. That’s not up to you to decide objectively, although you’re certainly free to have it as an opinion. But “too political” is such a subjective concept regardless.

the tv license is a total anachronism in this age of streaming services - being forced to fund the bbc even if you don't watch it simply isn't a sustainable model

(plus their october rebrand was an absolute mess)

It is an anachronism, but other solutions should be found. The main problem with this move though is that the government are doing it for political reasons and nothing else.

reading everything else in this thread... it seems you're more anti-the government than pro-the bbc

in this day and age expecting - nay, legally demanding (let's not forget the beeb fought tooth and nail for license nonpayment to remain a criminal offence) - citizens to pay a base £13/month (more than double the cost of netflix) for a service they may have no intention of using because they want to use a device for other things (like, say, netflix, or a games console for that matter) simply doesn't fly. it isn't 1990 any more and the bbc needs to accept that it no longer constitutes half of the television landscape

Well, that hasn't at all been my experience with TV Licencing. We have a TV that we only use for gaming, we take five minutes to inform TV Licencing of that every two years when they send us a letter, we then don't pay for a TV licence and don't hear a word from them until next time.
