That looks unbelievably awful.

It’s not.

Eh, it's pop-y fun.

Can somebody transcribe this?

I cannot read the bit where the secret text overlaps the bright part of the image.

I love studying the Henry-wives but I have zero interest in this show. Everything I've seen & heard about it tells me that it's basically le edgy theater-fanfic that tries so hard to be ~modern~ and rawr-grrrl-power...

...that, far from being an actual celebration of the "six," they're portrayed as nothing but shallow, modern-AU OCs, who have nothing in common with the real women or their real lives and the world in which they really lived.

To which I say a hearty "boo wendy testaburger"

Thank you!

I have only ever heard the opening number of this where they used the “divorced, beheaded, etc” thing as part of the actual song & thought it sounded like a fake musical in a non-musical show making fun of musicals. Which isn’t to say the show is bad as I haven’t seen the whole thing and probably never will, but that is distinctly the impression I got.

I don't like the spin on it either, the conceit means that the characters are no less contrived than their historical cultural counterpoints and I don't think they do do justice to several of them, but at the same time I think it was sincerely conceived.

I don't particularly like it but damn do some of the songs get stuck in my head.
The only thing I'll give it credit for is, despite having never had any interest in this particular topic before at least I now remember which of them was divorced, beheaded etc.

so many missed opportunities. Fr. ex. the real story of Anne of Cleves is so much funnier than anyone seems to realize and would've made a great musical number.

Her song is my absolute favorite though! Everyone else is singing about Henry and their relationships and she's just like "Is this a problem I'm too rich and happy to understand?"

I recently saw this and loved it. Catchy songs, nice costumes, and great performances. Though I enjoy it as pure fiction so it doesn't bother me if it's not accurate.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's as bad as OP does but man, those costumes are so freaking ugly.

It's the first Tudor related thing I've seen to not slut shame Katherine Howard and acknowledge her as an abused child/woman and victim of the times rather than a seductress.

So boo YOU, OP

This is such a weird reason to be mad at this secret. Every Tudor-related piece of fiction I've ever seen has been stupid about at least one historical figure and often about several. Nonfiction about Tudor-related stuff pretty much all agrees that Catherine Howard was a victim of circumstance and Henry's ego. Which, uh, kinda seems to fit in with what the secret says about accuracy

How us this not secret #6?! ;)

Love the soundtrack. Saw the show for the first time last month and enjoyed it immensely.

Is it historically accurate? No. Is it girl power-y? Yep. But it is a lot of fun. Each Queen is based on a specific pop star, so they don't take themselves too seriously.

I went in with most of my prior knowledge coming from The Tudors show, so I did learn some new things and bought some books to read up on them. There's a very good You Tube video called How Close to the Truth is Six? It addresses a lot of your criticisms.

Same! Songs and costumes are fun. (though I've seen guys on YouTube singing opening number and liked it more. Not really feminist of me). But the story is so... teenagy, like high-school AU in the worst sort of way. Why are the wives even fighting? This yay girlpower thing is so uninspiring and annoying.
I know, I know, it's just a fun musical with sparkly costumes, but it's not for me
