It is a hairstyle that can only work if you have the right face, and also a legion of stylists wrangling it back into place every couple of minutes. On every real person outwith the show it looked horrible within three seconds of leaving the salon.

I... did not realize OP was talking about the haircut! I thought 'the Rachel' was just like an ELL way of saying the character Rachel.

NAYRT, but yes, back in the '90s, that haircut specifically was called The Rachel! It was a big pop culture thing.

Most hairstyles over 20 years old are ugly in retrospect.

It kinda looks like a longer Karen, so yeah, pretty ugly.

I feel like the hairstyle on really looked like this in promos and the show title song. On the show it has a lot less body and just sorta frames her face, iirc. I have never liked the promo hairstyle.

Fun fact: Jennifer Aniston HATED this cut and grew it out as soon as she could.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, she didn't even like it.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't suit her! It looked better on my mum, though, and unlike a lot of shorter hairstyle, those short bits are still long enough to tie back when needed.

The thing about trendy hairstyles, and this one definitely was, in the 90s, is that they look bad on a lot of people.

I feel the same way about mullets, now known as wolf cuts, and center parts, and quite a lot of curtain bang hairstyles, and those instagram eyebrows. If you think these all look great, wait 20 years. HA HA HA.

my hairstylist is younger than me but she loves when I come in because she can rant at me about how much she hates that mullets are back. I hate it too but she has extra reason and I let her vent to me, and then I tip her well.

Instagram eyebrows look ugly as hell even now. *grumble grumble*
But that's true. Trendy things look good on some people, but if you have like two trends they are going to look bad most of the time. Everytime you can see another article how low cut jeans are in fashion again there are a lot of women screaming in horror. And several saying that that's the only way to wear jeans for them.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-09 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not good and I'm glad it's mostly in the past.
