You know, I never thought about this because there are certainly female characters out there that just don't have children.

But none of them that I can think of have said it was intentional. And there are a lot of them that are not at a stage in their life that they'd necessarily have kids whether they want them or not, who then get saddled with other people's children and seem to enjoy it or at least are begrudgingly good at it - which does not necessarily mean that they want children of their own, but there is the suggestion that the female character in question has motherly qualities.

(And oh holy crap no, having children is a nightmare scenario for me for so many reasons. Would be nice to see that reflected in fictional characters too, even if it was just an exchange after taking care of other people's kids like "Wow, you're going to be a great mother someday!" "Actually I don't intend to have kids, but I'm okay with being their cool aunt.")

Yeah, it's not unusual for a female character to just not have kids. As someone said in the comments below, the main reason a female character gets a line about not wanting kids is to foreshadow her changing her mind. I don't see the problem; it's just conservation of detail. There strikes me as little reason to bring up the subject of kids at all if the story's not going to do anything with it. Because (unlike some women with unfortunately nosy families used to try to make me think something was wrong with me for not having experienced) most of us don't live under the constant pressure of being asked when we're having kids. I'm almost 40, I have no siblings or cousins to pass on my parents' and grandparents' genes instead of me, and I have never been asked in my life why I don't have kids yet.
