Writing thread for lonely writers (inspired by secret #4)

Bring me your rants, your WIP status updates, your current stalled projects. Tell me about your writing.

I don't know what I'm lacking in more, motivation or plot inspiration. I blame it partly on my fandoms being mostly old ones, and there being no forums to discuss this stuff on no more, and partly on my burned out mental state.

I really want to get back into writing. I was in the middle of a few PWPs, but the one I really want to finish is my one-shot version of Sauron forging the One Ring. But my inspiration has been dead for months. I just want my muse to come back, please.

I was whining about this on my writing group's discord but oh my god, I just finally got to a point where I was getting an update buffer on the fic I'm focusing on and now that I've got two weeks (so this friday and next friday) my attention span is all 'y'know, we COULD instead work on that one idea from 2016 where you wrote 500 words and then forgot about it for literal years' and...

Anyway, long story short, I now have the first chapter written of a whole new story and going 'oh my god why can you not focus enough to get something DONE'.

I am enjoying writing the things I'm writing, and apparently there are a handful of other people who enjoy it, and I'm actually incredibly pleased with a couple things I've written recently (particularly the ending to one of the multichapter things, because it loops right back around to the first story in the "series" that I inadvertently started writing 20 years ago)...

But dangit I wish I could write something I was proud of in a fandom that is active and not a 20-year-old one-shot video game. I really only have one other person to talk to about this stuff who even knows who the characters are and gives a crap about them.

(Alternately I wish I knew how to file off the serial numbers because at this point given all the worldbuilding and backstory I've done, it apparently stands on its own well enough for people who never played the game, and maybe more people would be into it as original fic. But... I have no idea how I could change certain plot points and the way magic works and specific physical attributes to not be entirely derivative since they tie so completely into one character's identity. :P)

I've been working on an original novel for the past few years. I have a few solid chapters written, and a lot of various ideas and scenes, but have been stuck for the past few months. Mostly because the story keeps changing drastically as inspiration strikes and I keep having to go back and rewrite everything (Damn it self, stick with one thing and just go with it!)

I also want to get back into writing Fanfiction. I could use the practice, but don't really have any inspiration or motivation to.

I'm 18k into an approximately 40k-word TGAA fic but progress has stalled thanks to recovering from a recent trip to the ER. I feel bummed about not having the energy for it but that in itself isn't helping me get back to making words.

I have a lot of ideas so I write a few fics in my fandom. I post the short ones I manage to finish. Then I do not get the engagement beyong a few 'nice' and leave the longer ones unfinished. It's a trend across many fandoms.

I have less than 2,000 words to edit on a 30K fic I've been working on since Nov. 2020, and I'm liiitle bit stuck. Not as badly as I have been stuck in the past, and I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself because I want it to be good, but holy shit, I just want to get it done!!

I keep coming up with new WIPs and while I'm getting a decent amount of work done on all three of them at the same time IMO I'm afraid it won't last. And I'll run out of energy for it. For now I actually feel pretty good while writing and fulfilled when I finish a chapter. I just can't keep coming up with ideas for stories I'd love to create for stuff I like. Why am I like this. Most of them are for small fandoms no one gives a shit about aside from me and while I like the idea of giving smaller fandoms content I also feel a bit :\ when there's not much interaction or it takes a while for people to notice it's there since the tag for that fandom moves slow.

I keep opening and closing the word document with my current WIP instead of, you know, actually finishing the damn thing. I keep telling myself that I'll finish it and then post it, but I kinda want to start posting it now . . . except I know I'll never finish it if I post it first.

First time vs. rewatch

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-02-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
What was the last thing you rewatched, and what was the last thing you watched for the first time?

Currently rewatching Criminal Minds and Babylon 5. Last thing I watched for the first time I believe was Eternals.

Currently rewatching The Prisoner again. Just finished a rewatch of Babylon 5 as well!

I'm slowly making my way through the OG Battlestar Galactica for the first time. Last weekend my parents and I watched Night Train to Munich, which I had never seen and was great!

Yay, B5. Such a great show. I have only seen maybe two episodes of OG Battlestar. Is it good?

Rewatched I Love Lucy recently. Or at the episodes that are online.

Just watched the final three episode of Boba Fett since they are basically 2.5 episode of the Mandalorian.

I currently re-watched Titanic. I find myself doing that from time to time. I've also been re-watching various 80s Jem episodes.

I haven't really started anything new lately. I have a list of things, but haven't got the time, or the attention span, lately to start anything.

Rewatched, some random X-Files episode.

Watched for the first time, most of the Jack Reacher show on Amazon. It's very mediocre. It's fine if you want to watch a decent and very faithful TV production of a very mediocre airport thriller basically.

Rewatched all three seasons of Stranger Things. Watched an episode of The Magicians for the first time.
