NFTs are made by grifters who outsource any remotely-creative bits to work-for-hire artists, and are sold to wannabe grifters. If there's a legally-reviewed contract involved, it usually says the buyer doesn't get special rights to the design or the IP -- all they get is a digital token including a URL where an image of the character is uploaded. The buyer's goal is to re-sell the token to someone else for a profit.
Also, NFTs are marketed to the kind of techbros who are convinced that every part of it -- including the "adoptables" aspect -- is a new and world-shaking innovation, which nobody else ever thought of before they got into it.
...and no comparison would be complete without mentioning: the tokens are traded using cryptocurrency networks, which are, broadly speaking, an environmental nightmare. Regular adoptables are traded using DMs and PayPal, because those buyers just aren't sophisticated enough to melt a block of Arctic ice every time they make a transaction.
