NFTs (at least the kind that are popular right now) basically are adoptables. Except that the piece of code that says that you own it uses a special kind of technology, and a bunch of people have decided that anything that uses this special kind of technology is worth huge amounts of money (or they have decided to act as though this were true because it lets them scam a bunch of people out of money).

Also there's a bunch of separate arguments because some people think the special kind of technology used in NFTs could do a bunch of cool things in the future, and other people think that the special kind of techology can mostly do bad things and is also bad for the environment. But those are basically separate arguments. For the purposes of how NFTs actually function right now, they really are just adoptables with a fancy bit of code attached that people think is worth money for no real reaon.
