Yeah, it was hugely important to a lot of girls and women (like me) in the 80s when it was original and there wasn't anything else like it but as time went on its many, many flaws became more apparent. And then we all found out about MZB and ugh. I just can't, especially as you look back and see this coming through in her books. Which is not the case for all bad people who are artists, but it definitely is for her.

This. I loved the series a lot back in the 80s, and I still think the books are well-written with great worldbuilding. But even then, there were some things that bugged me, although I just ignored them at the time (like the dude in Hawkmistress that was creeping on young boys and Dyan Ardais being a rapist and the only reason it was considered wrong was that he went after a kid who happened to be valuable to the Comyn). Then I found out about what MZB was doing irl, and I just can't read those books any more.

The thing that gets be about Dyan in particular is that she goes into fairly elaborate detail about how bad his actions were and how terrible it was for his victim, and how blatantly immoral it was for the comyn to look the other way. So she KNEW. She just didn't actually care irl
