I'd venture that the majority of people don't keep up with what the creators of the media they enjoy are doing. Celeb gossip is a niche interest, and it was even more so a couple decades ago.

I think that's true of of the majority of people, but the majority of fans? People who are in fandom in any active, engaged way often tend to be aware of and keep up with what the creators are doing to some degree or other.

I think you could honestly say that's one of the crucial dividing marks between being In Fandom and not.

Not really. A certain segment of fandom obsesses over creators, but the majority don't give a fuck beyond keeping track of whatever new projects are on their agenda and interacting with their social media accounts (and that one is relatively recent).

Like I said, some people are more aware of it and other people are less. Some care a lot about it, some are just marginally aware of it, and that's fine. But it's not "obsessing over creators" or "celebrity gossip", it's a part of fandom.

I get that it's a part of fandom for you, specifically.

It's not a "crucial dividing mark" of who's in fandom and who's not. It is, by definition, celebrity gossip. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Prior to social media being the way it is now I don't think being so tuned in to the creator(s) was much of a thing. You were fans of their work but perhaps didn't know too much about them. So this way of engaging with and viewing creator(s) as very attached to engaging with the work itself is new to me. I keep creator(s) at an arms length. Sure they Made The Thing, but I don't want anything to do with them. I enjoy works more when I can look at it with fresh eyes and not constantly worrying over what so and so said on Twitter (which I don't even use.) Fandom is more fun for me when they're not constantly brought up. I prefer it when they just lay the story on the table and fuck off. Essentially. Let the fans play in the sandbox.

I follow lots of people for fan content, but I don’t think I follow a single creator for any of the shows I like.

This. I'm in fandom for the fan content, not the creators. I just want the art and fic and all that fun stuff.

Not really. That may be the case in fandoms that are majority or entirely RPF - sports fandom, bandom, and so on - but the majority of fans of fictional media don't keep up with celebrity gossip. They might keep up with creators' projects, but not so much the behind the scenes drama. That's part of why there's often so much backlash or broken pedestal moments when a creator of a fannish property is revealed to be a genuinely terrible person. The rumors might've been circulating for years, but they haven't actually permeated the main part of fandom.

This. In my main fandom, the extent of the writer ever being brought up is "They also did most of the writing for this other video game, if you like [Canon] you should check that one out too."
