Yes, it is. I'm in the same boat as the OP - played the heck out of Dynasty Warriors, got to know the Samurai Warriors cast through the Orochi series. I thought Ranmaru was a woman until I heard some in-battle dialog that cleared things up. "I am as strong as I am manly!"

Some people might say that his smooth chest makes it obvious, but it didn't for me. Small breasts can look flat under a fitted wrapped top. Ranmaru has a feminine face and a voice far more womanly than I would expect for a teenage boy. That made me classify him as female and not think too much about it at the moment.

Doesn't Magoichi Saika mistake Ranmaru for a woman in one of the SW games?

Samurai Warriors 2 Empires, Magoichi tried to hit on Ranmaru thinking Ranmaru was a girl.

Thankfully I already knew who Ranmaru was thanks to the Onimusha games so didn't make that mistake though it was a close call.
