There really was a much better show in there, even with the casting choices they made. Danny in Luke Cage was a little glimpse at that. I was never hugely into the show, but I think I could have been.

I have never seen Iron Fist but I really enjoyed how Danny was written in The Defenders. It was pretty close to what you described, although it didn't lean quite so hard into the 'hippy soulboy spiritual cuck', as you put it. I would totally watch a show written as you've described, especially if they kept Jessica Henwick around.

The poor guy would have to relearn/learn a LOT of stuff about history, imperialism/colonization, racism, etc. and he still would probably appear racist.


Disney would never have the balls to take social commentary in that direction. They'd do at most one or so jokes, but never full-scale lean into it.

I only know Iron Fist from reputation, but I'm sure there's plenty to be mined from the concept, but taking it super seriously was a mistake. I only made it partway through Daredevil and Jessica Jones because each episode felt like lifting an anvil, and your reward was lifting another anvil. If they bring back the rest of the Netflix characters/actors, I really hope they let them be fun and relax a little.

The second season with more Colleen and Misty was much better, I thought. Also more Sacha Dhawan and you can't go wrong with that!
