Fanmixes and where to share them

(Anonymous) 2022-02-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is fanmix culture on the wane? I make a lot of playlists in general, fanmixes especially, and aside from my YouTube account, I'm never sure where to store or share them.

I've tried Reddit and Twitter with no real success. I don't use Spotify and don't want to. Is 8tracks still viable? It used to be my jam but I never went back after it got rebooted.

Point is, I want other fans to indulge my fantasy of being a radio DJ. Also to share stuff I like in the context of other stuff I like, and to talk about the music and the fandom itself.

I used to LOVE 8TRACKS!

I haven't logged into it for a long while, so idk. But what I have seen is people posting their fanmix tracklist or playlist link (YT/Spotify) on the A/N of their fic or in the beginning of chapter one. So maybe there?

Honestly I would stick to making tracklists and having a separate YT account for the playlists. Sigh. I remember back when you could download the zip of all the songs, the person made a tracklist and even had pretty album cover art. LJ days.

So you're saying I need to write more fic as a way to cleverly evangelize my musical taste? I can get down with that.

RIP 2010s fanmix culture. We used to put in effort!

AYRT

Lmao I think so? I'm not on Tumblr/Twitter so I'm not sure how that works there, but that's where I've seen fanmixes these days -- attached to the fics! You could probably "gift" a playlist to a fic writer too (if it's a WIP. Some people are very nice and say this user created a playlist for this fic! Link here, but idk if everyone would do that.)

Truly, RIP that fanmix culture. 8 tracks was the spot where I'd find new songs/get inspiration based off of mood playlists. Although maybe TikTok has something similar? Idk.

Damn I miss those days. I loved doing fanmixes, cover art and all.
8tracks sort of works, but no one seems to use it.
I hate spotify with passion.
I've uploaded couple of mixes on Ao3, but it's mostly a miss, this is not a good site for archiving content that is not text

I'm the Anon who responded from above. I feel like there was a drop off from 8 tracks because a lot of music got pulled. Spotify I don't bother.

If you want more traction to your fanmix using A03, I recommend posting it with a fic. One shot. Drabble. Imagine. Whatever. Will definitely get eyes on it.

Yeah, 8tracks have less music, also it works really weird for me
Yeah no, I don't write, it's not a thing I like, especially since I am not native English speaker. But it's a good tip actually

Man, I miss the old LJ fanmix culture so much! I miss full track lists, and cover art, and carefully chosen lyric snippets, and maybe even meta for each track (and okay the entire fanmix in a convenient zipfile was pretty nice too). Good times.

why the hate for spotify? it's where I make all my playlists now and am slowly importing my 8Tracks mixes to. I link to them in the author's notes of my fic.

8tracks used to be amazing, god tier, especially with 8hacks around to let you download the playlists. But now you can listen to one playlist and you must wait EIGHT HOURS before you can listen to another one so if you picked the wrong one for writing or didn't write fast enough? TOO BAD FOR YOU, etc. They also have the two-songs-per-artist rule that can cripple some of my playlists eventually.

spotify has been a godsend for me. I'm listening to it right now and it has never failed to produce what I was looking for, even local indie bands I hear on the the local radio night our rock station does. and the ability to loop tracks for writing!

OP here. I'm stubborn (probably needlessly so) and I already mooch off a family subscription to YouTube Premium.
