I didn't see it as romantic either, which I always thought was influenced by the age people were when they saw this movie. I saw it when I was like 6 and again when I was sbout 25. I like your interpretation, OP, because that makes the goblin king more of a fey creature.

That's pretty much the impression I got too. That any sense of "romance" from him was just a game of make-believe to arouse her interest so she would give up on trying to save the baby (who he definitely wanted to keep; if she'd just settle down and accept it, he'd happily keep her too), and although he certainly was interesting, when it came down to it she knew better.

But I dunno, I'm notoriously bad at identifying romantic/sexual subtext.

Not OP, but yes! This is totally how it came across to me, too.

I thought it was romance/love as a kid, but as an adult, I think it's more complicated. Fascination, as you said... and maybe something more, though fascination and something alien to him might be enough to hold his interest for some time, given the circumstances. Most fanfics deal with this ship years after the movie ends, when Sarah is an adult and more able to hold her own and the Goblin King has had time to think, watch and develop real feelings for her.

Yeah, I thought it was just part of his game to distract her. Sort of a, "well, nothing else worked"

(Anonymous) 2022-02-19 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely so: she was sexually attracted to him so he worked with that, giving her what he thought she wanted. His power was all tricks and illusions, and Sarah could break the illusion once she understood that.

Yes, this.

I saw this movie later in life so I missed a lot of the swoon people got when they watched it young.

In particular, I never really got the romanticism of the line about "do whatever I want and I'll be your slave" because like............ you want *her* to be your slave, and then you'll be *her* slave???

Maybe I'm too ace for this but it never made sense to me lol

I saw this movie as an adult and didn’t think he actually wanted to marry her necessarily. But if she’d stayed with him they’d probably have a lot of sex lol
