See, I always thought that the reason behind female characters disliking things like embroidery was that it was a sort of shorthand for domestic skills being the only sorts of skills that women in those settings were allowed to learn. A woman couldn't learn to be a blacksmith or a hunter or a carpenter, for example.

That's still silly, though. Domestic skills are useful, even if they're not well respected. It's also extra frustrating because they're often dismissed and devalued by men for sexist reasons, and then also devalued by women because of internalized sexism.

Which is fine, but "embroidery" always seems to be the shorthand for "useless and feminine" when in fact it was a highly skilled trade. The female characters in question could equally be complaining about cheese-making or accounting or brewing or basketmaking. Thought I'd like to see a gender-swapped version with a boy complaining about how he has to learn to read because he's a younger son, what a waste of time.
