(Anonymous) 2022-02-19 04:00 am (UTC)(link)1. It is valid to bring attention to the tension that exists in regards to women enjoying things which are enforced as an ideal. You can portray a female character enjoying needlework while also making it clear it's a bad thing this is expected and rigid.
2. The negative aspect of this type of sexism is that women choosing other options is looked down upon. Not that the things they are "allowed" to do are "stupid."
3. Sewing is how clothes and many other goods are made. Even in modern times despite the fact we have the help of machinery. It's entirely ridiculous to think sewing is at all a silly, vapid skill. Knights had to know how to darn their own socks! Most jobs outside the home that had to do with sewing were traditionally done by men. Sailors would sew and knit. Etc.
4. I'm kind of tired of the only good female protag in these types of stories being the kind who wants to roll in the dirt and basically take on aspects of manhood, usually in terms of war, to be seen as smart and with agency.
5. The ideal is usually different from reality. The way a lot of female characters are depicted in these types of stories only ever existed in fantasy, even back then. It shows an ignorance for the time you're writing for to basically use a caricature of some ideal women of the time were made to look up to but most certainly never truly lived up to even if some came close. No, not every woman was a lady who sat around in silk gowns doing embroidery on handkerchiefs all day every day, only taking breaks for mass. And no, having your female character obsessed with learning how to use a sword and going to fight in battle isn't the only way to depict breaking away from that. Maybe she wants to be a well-known artist, or become a doctor, or open an apothecary, or train horses, or be a carpenter, or an astronomer, or any number of things women weren't "supposed" to do.
