It would be very OOC for a lot of characters, but all AYRT said is that it worked for this one specific character to be written as trans and punk. I do agree that the punk aesthetic and being part of the music scene in a big way has more chances of making a character OOC in fic than being written as trans. As I can personally confirm for myself through all of the punk/scene kid and band/musician AUs I’ve read, which were all wildy OOC. And really not my kind of fic usually as a result, despite me being a fan of punk rock and fashion, and generally punk aesthetic. In comparison, I’ve read a lot more trans headcanon fic that has the characters be a lot more IC. Because many of these authors know the characters well enough to know how to write them, and know that being trans doesn’t(and realistically wouldn’t) change a characters personality completely, so they wouldn’t need to be OOC. So my experience with trans fic is completely different from ayrt’s.

I’ve never really seen what you’re talking about as far as people treating being trans as a character trait, though. It is a character trait in a way, as far as someone writing a character as trans involves them technically adding that as a trait to the character the same way any other descriptive traits are added to characters. But being trans is definitely not a personality trait, if that’s what you mean. And it would be frustrating for people to insist otherwise, because that’s a reductive and ignorant way of looking at trans people.

I read the comment as "all other trans male headcanons in general were OOC", not necessarily for this one character so that's why I thought it was a weird generalisation.

And yes, personality trait. That's the word I was looking for, thanks.

Oh, I definitely get how that would seem like a generalization now that you mention that. And rereading AYRT’s comment, I can see how it can be read that way. I can’t even really confirm that that isn’t what they meant honestly, but I hope they weren’t saying something generalized like that.

Yeah, it was a bit generalized, but sadly people really manage often enough to make being trans into character trait at least in fandoms I read fics in. Or it's vaguely reads as a fetish thing, so yakes for me.
Sorry for any confusion, I just mean that after this fic I have a soft spot trans punk characters, this fic was really good and character in question was described as someone from subculture one way or another in canon
