Most of the criticism I've seen (in actual fandom circles) was the lack of bearded female dwarves, the way the costumes look kinda cheap so far, the short hair on the elves, the fact that they keep mentioning how their great inspiration is Game of Thrones, the way they completely changed Elrond's character, Galadriel wearing a Feanorian Star on her armour, and Elrond's casting in general.

Are there also a lot of racist comments? Yes. But pretending that all the criticism is just racist screeching is such major bullshit.

Personally, I'm kinda leery about the very American faux-diversity which means black and white only, god forbid anyone ask for more diversity than the tokenism they put in the trailers solely because they KNEW it would generate outrage which they can now conveniently use to dismiss all criticism as "you're just all racist if you don't like it". Because let's face it, this is Amazon. They're not in it for the social justice and activism.

> Galadriel wearing a Feanorian Star on her armour

Can you elaborate on this and why it's a good/bad thing? It's been a hot minute since I've read the books.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, it's Feanor's emblem/sigil and Galadriel really, really didn't like Feanor.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

What a weird thing to put in the show. It's a detail that they had to know to include, but did it against a known character trait. What is the point of having the knowledge but then using it wrong?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
They are apparently wilfully changing characters' personalities as well so eh. I mean, it could always be an honest mistake, or maybe just a badly thought-through design choice because they didn't actually do their research properly. But either way it's a bit weird.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
That is a great question, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Her personal dislike aside, considering that her father is now King of the Noldor in Aman, the post that Feanor would've have held had he not rebelled, wouldn't her wearing his house's sigil be considered treasonous? And a personal betrayal to her family? Insane.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"which means black and white only"

eh that makes sense to me because why wouldn't there be elves/hobbits/humans with darker skin? this is a fantasy world, they aren't going to have races the same way we do in our modern world but there's no reason there can't be darker-skinned elves or hobbits or what have you.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not complaining about the black actors, im complaining that from what I've seen of the cast pictures, black actors are just abbout the only other ethnicity next to the white actors. Especially Asian actors are once again noticeably absent.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yup
As always racial diversity somehow looks not exactly diverse

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
I could've sworn there was a South Asian-looking actress in the trailer? Anyway I think the diversity casting conversation should pause until the show comes out and we get to see ALL the characters.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
this. i'm not gonna talk about that until the show comes out and we get a better look at the full cast, because atm it's just a teaser and those always have minimal info in them.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a fantasy world with like the deepest lore out of all fantasy lores. If anyone were black in canon, that information would have been stated explicitly. It clearly says that darker-skinned hobbits absolutely exist in that universe. Not black hobbits, though, because when hobbits see a black person, they note the colour of their skin, so it must have been unusual to them. There are black people that also absolutely exist, not black elves though, because that would also have been remarked on. Surely that is not too much to ask for when fans just want the source material adapted faithfully.

I’m probably missing something, but what’s the point of this comment exactly? Are you against the casting choices? Or just saying that you don’t think they fit into previously established canon without you being against it per se?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who has an admiration for the depth of lore in this series, this is the kind of take we surely can leave behind.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Let other lore be used for modern agendas.

you got dragons but us non-whites are too far. got it. lmao, god ya'll are so fragile when it comes to this it's sad.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
For real.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is such a shit take. Imagine caring more a teeny tiny piece of lore than onscreen representation.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also (so far) not like they racebent existing characters, the ones in the show - at least so far - are OCs.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We also don't get details about what color clothing they're wearing unless it's specifically relevant, but we can assume that they had access to decorative textiles and won't get big mad if someone's wearing bright orange without it having been expressly mentioned even though Gondor's colors were described directly elsewhere, right?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Galadriel WHAT with WHAT NOW?!

I mean, I already had a feeling they'd basically skim the appendices on the Second Age and then chuck them out in favor of writing whatever the fuck stupid fantasy story they wanted but yall this is fucking terrible. Casting is fine but this is as unforgivable as elves at Helm's Deep.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, that's fair! I'd seen one comment on the beardless dwarf lady (though I thought she was beautiful) and otherwise it was all about black people in MY Tolkein???

That said, there are actors with Arabic and Sri Lankan heritage there, so it's definitely not just black and white.
