I used a 1st gen Nook for years until I decided I wanted something with a bigger screen and a backlight, then I switched to Kobo Forma. That sounds like it's more than you're looking for, but it's been fantastic to me-- I keep the backlight dialed down to 2-3% at night so I can read in bed and don't use it at all during the day, and I use calibre to manage all my files.

If you don't mind branching away from the Kindle/Nook staples, you might check out what Kobo has to offer.
