What exactly do they even think "proshipper" means? In the reality I live in, it means you do your own thing, and if someone else ships something you don't like, you just...mind your own business. Mute or block if it really bothers you. Spend more of your precious hobby time enjoying the ships you do like rather than screaming about the ones you don't.

That's just the normal baseline for your average fan who's not a self-righteous asshole, isn't it?

The day I found out that some people think "proshipper" is synonymous with "someone who will spam incest and pedo ships on purpose" was a terrible day.

If you think that was a bad day, wait until you learn they are right. And saying ephebophilia instead of pedophilia does not change matters.

Pro-ship, as far as I'm concerned, is MEANT to be an extension of "ship and let ship", but clearly antis can't let that sentiment stand because Some Ships Are Bad, so the ship-and-let-shippers are lumped in with the weirdos who harass people, apparently, despite being very different groups.

Like, as an anti, do you harass people who ship things you don't like and call them pedophiles (or ephebophiles, I guess), or do you just let it be because it's not your business? Do you see how annoying it would be to be lumped together with the worst people on your "side"?

Right? I'm not in any fandoms with teenage characters, and yet adult-aimed fandoms like fucking HANNIBAL are still riddled with antis who think any depiction of consensual sexuality between middle-aged men (serial killers, canonical cannibalistic master chef, canonical fucked-up therapist/patient relationship) is somehow "pedophilic" if teen fans see explicit fanart.

Teens with delicate sensibilities should not be watching the fucking show in the first place. It is FOR ADULTS.

They think it means "Fan who ships all the wrongest, most disgusting, most problematic ships and spams them everywhere untagged to try and force everyone else to ship them too." Or they think it means "Fan who minds their own business in fandom and that's a problem, because if you're not putting yourself out there and telling incest shippers to kill themselves, you're exactly as bad as the shippers and are actively normalizing incest in mainstream society in real life."

I don't even ship any underage pairings or anything like that (why would I, teenagers are just not interesting to me at all - not sexually or in any other way either).

I just can't wrap my brain around the idea of harassing people about their fucking ships. If I see fanart or link to a fic of a ship I don't like, I just...shrug and scroll on? I get being momentarily angry or grossed out, but what I don't get is the idea that you have to yell at the person who made it for some performative reason.

Just...leave it alone and go find stuff you do like. Fandom is a hobby. Invest your time in what gives you pleasure.

I'm wondering where in the hell I missed the memo about this change of definition, but I'm absolutely positive it came directly from the people who can't leave someone to their own damn business and therefore had to find a way to make "fans who mind their own business" into a Problem, and here we are.

I am absolutely overjoyed to watch all the sanctimonious asses who lectured me over changes to fandom terminology when they were the ones making them, get so butt-hurt and angry that a new change is leaving them behind too. Enjoy the shift guys, it is all you yelling at clouds from here on out.

They haven't actually succeeded in changing the definition outside of their insular little circles. To me a proshipper is just a mostly normal fan who believes in minding their own business, but it does carry a connotation of being more willing to engage in this kind of wanky discourse than people who just ignore the whole argument.

Just like antis haven't totally succeeded in changing the meaning of "pedophile" to "someone who ships Keith and Shiro from Voltron" to anyone but themselves.

I'm not even sure it's that deep.

I think it's more like "people who ship or support the shipping of things I personally find disgusting for any reason." We know it's not about morals, because if the harassment and doxing of real life people are any indication, the antis have none.

It's got nothing to do with morals, it's about using the most inflammatory terms possible to win an argument that's really only about personal disgust. "This ship squicks me" doesn't get the same results that "these shippers are PEDOPHILES" does.
