Someone should tell the writers.
I'm not trying to start wank either (nor do I think that someone else having a different opinion is wank, so don't worry, I don't think you're trying to start wank), but arguing that Castiel is pointless seems absolutely ridiculous to me. Firstly, his role isn't through. Secondly, it doesn't matter whether or not anyone else could have pulled Dean out of hell. They didn't. Castiel did. Therefore he has already served a purpose so far and he has served other purposes since. I can back that up with numerous examples, but wicked awesome anons can't ever seem to back their "OMG POINTLESS" up, so I generally don't bother. Because all I get is "whatever he sucks I still think he's pointless." Which is why I pretty much why I just LOL at them.

So okay, maybe by your definition Castiel is pointless as Dean's angelic liasion, but he conducts an important job every time he appears onscreen by connecting Dean to the bigger picture, keeping Winchesters and fans alike informed on whats going on in the Heaven-vs-Hell war.
But if you can't appreciate Castiel in that role, then what's Show to do? Regardless of what kind of character they'd created, the character's function would have been the same. Had Castiel been killed off already he would have just been replaced with a new angel performing the exact same functions. So why is it such a bad thing to have a character around for whom the majority of fans seem to have a very positive response?
Whether he seems pointless or not, his function in the show is necessary. You said you can't see his relevance in anything, and that nothing he's said or done couldn't have been done by someone else. Who? He was the first angel to appear, was one of three, now two, and of those two, he's the one still connected to the other angels. There is no other character that could perform his duties, and if a new character were to be created, they'd fall into the exact same role.
Whether you like him or not, I still think Castiel is a necessary character.

To be honest...Ruby is doing a better job informing the Winchesters about what is going on, especially since it seems Castiel's just been lied to this entire time. I'd trust just about anything other than his intel at the moment. The man doesn't exactly seem to have it all together.
I don't see what his function is at all, actually. What has he done? It seems like he mostly just shows up, orders people around, and makes Sam feel bad because he's the Antichrist. Oh, and almost gets Dean killed. I'm hoping that the lack of action has some inherent meaning that I'm just not seeing, but he doesn't seem to be doing anything other than watching and instigating. Why is he around? The only things that have happened around him is that Alistair died (which he, again, just watched, basically) and Dean has something new to cry about.
Not all characters have to have specific roles and have to be useful players - Ash wasn't particularly needed, but I loved him anyway because he was fun. Castiel is just...boring. He has no personality, he doesn't do anything, he can't think for himself. To borrow from Harry Potter, it's kind of like having a house elf around without the excitement of them trying to kill themselves for disobeying orders. And at least they had more rounded character arcs.
I thought 4.16 was a huge step forward in regards to Castiel's character, but it was an episode mostly about him that just ended up showcasing how he doesn't do anything than have other, stronger personalities fighting over him and doing the things he should be able to do, but can't.
That was...far too long, so in conclusion, I think he's too lukewarm and there hasn't been enough of an answer of why he's here to make him a useful character in my eyes. Your mileage may vary. :)
