True, humans do organize and classify things. However, the key flaw to your argument is that prejudice is a learned characteristic, not something a person is born with.

Sorry, try again.

People classifying things by nature entails that they will be suspect to prejudice because no one can have all the answers all the time.

Sorry, you lose.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I am not really understanding what you are trying to say.

By organizing/categorizing, I meant that the human brain needs to categorize and classify its surroundings in order to make sense of its environment. However, assigning something as "good" or "bad" is a learned behavior. Not genetic.

So, I think you are still failing. Sorry.

By the way,

Prejudice:

1: injury or damage resulting from some judgment or action of another in disregard of one's rights ; especially : detriment to one's legal rights or claims
2 a (1): preconceived judgment or opinion (2): an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge b: an instance of such judgment or opinion c: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics

I think you're confusing yourself and I refuse to let you bring me down with you.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It is my understanding that you believe that racism is coded into people's DNA and therefore can never be changed/abolished. Therefore, we should all be comfortable letting it happen because there is nothing you can do.

I believed I had misunderstood you, and I wished to verify that by pointing out what I believed was your argument's flaw.

Very well. I wouldn't want to bring you down to my oh-so-undesirable level.

[identity profile] pack1ife.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, greatly. And if you still think that's what I was saying I feel that you haven't been paying attention to anything that's been said.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
O rly?

'Write a book' was an insult I used in a screenplay once too as simply something to say to someone when they complain about an unchangable issue-so I see where you're going with this

Improbably, unlikely, I believe racism applies
[In regards to racism changing/ending.]

uh, it's not a bad ideal to try to change it, but I think it's pretty inherent in human nature for one group of people to classify or marginalize another. I'm pretty much with the secret maker in thinking that everyone needs to accept this and rise above it

People classifying things by nature entails that they will be suspect to prejudice because no one can have all the answers all the time.

I have been paying attention to what you've been saying because I believe you are wrong.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, so you are no longer going to respond then?

Fine, I shall give you my uncensored opinion about you and your argument because being polite apparently gets us nowhere. I read your one sentence comments (which were so informative and vague on your actual opinion that they needed two more to explain what you actually meant) and disagreed with you.

Your opinion that prejudice is a natural part of the human psyche is both ignorant and offensive. You offered no facts or data to back your claim up, instead optioning for a very poorly worded anecdote. When I provided a counterargument, you responded with dismissal and insults. When I again explained why I did not understand your statements in greater detail, because I gave you the benefit of the doubt that maybe I was the one who had erred, you responded with another dismissal and insulted me again.

This says to me that you have no opinion actually worth listening to because you prefer to hide behind biology without bothering to understand it. The debate over cultural appropriation does not need to stop simply because you have the attitude of an apathetic teenager. Racism can never end? Fine. Go and believe that, I, however, am not so ready to give up on what I believe in yet.
