(Anonymous) 2022-02-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)I can't remember the last time my reaction to two of my favorite characters getting together was such a massive NO, PLEASE, NO.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)But based on S1, yeah, this pairing isn't for me, and feels like a bit of a misstep. I mean, I think there's definitely something interesting they could do with that relationship, and how in some ways it parallels Rebecca's marriage, and really digging into the complications of that. But even if they did a really good job with that plotline, it still feels very engineered to me. Like it's a development that exists specifically to spark ~meaningful discussion~. (Whereas S1 of the show felt almost miraculously effortless in how it provoked contemplation and discussion.)

(Anonymous) 2022-02-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)Very much not for meaningful discussion. The concerns really weren't brought up at all. And they broke up because she needed time to work on herself, not because of any outside problems. Her mom, Keeley, bff, and goddaughter's reaction to finding out was "You go girl!" And Ted just seemed shocked and mildly disappointed, though that may just have been because it was a secret and because of the team. Problematic aspects completely ignored.

Especially because I couldn't tell what the trigger for this horrible decision was. Usually I can say, well person X is this type of vulnerable position, so well i don't think this is good I understand. But this? Rebecca is getting good sex, and is having good valuable friendships, so what need is Sam so good at fulfilling that she has to date him against all foreseeable risk. Just makes me think this is a huge and shitty character fault.

But I totally agree. Rebecca had rightfully defended Sam's decision-making, and that whole action could be thrown into doubt!! Both of them made a couple of enemies this season too! Which, maybe the show set-up on purpose. But mostly, I don't want to have a storyline where either has to deal with the outcome of their fling, because I don't know why it had to happen in the first place!
