But before that one came out I was kind of confused about why people loved him so much, cause he didn't really have a personality

Personally, everything we saw in 4x16, I'd already seen in Castiel. It wasn't emphasized as much, nor it was it ever the focus of an episode before that one, but it was there. That's why I loved him. I never saw him as bland or without personality.

Okay, I could see it when he had that conversation with Dean that one time at the playground, but before that episode he was just this random guy who came in occasionally for like a minute and had no personality. I'm confused how you could've seen all this shit in him even then, without him doing anything to show it.

Yeah, before 4x07 he was pretty much the Exposition Fairy (bonus: actual wings!), and most of what I mentioned in the previous comment comes from that episode as well as 4x10, but there was still enough there before that I found him intriguing/likable anyway. Most of it came from Misha's performance; the confused head-tilts, the innocence, the curiosity, la la.

LOL Exposition Fairy. That made my day, right there. But yeah like, I could see being like hmm interesting, but I was confused when there was all OMG CASTIEL FTW <333. It was just like, really? Though granted, his confused face is hella cute.

I was like that, too, but to be honest, I can't really articulate why. Some mixture of what was, the potential of what could be, and attraction - because yes, his confused face is freaking ADORABLE. Whatever it was, it just clicked for me. I was devouring fanfic after three episodes.
