But you've just said they would never talk to you again if they knew you disagreed with them on one trivial subject. Either people who do these kinds of secrets are exaggerating - in which case fair enough, but the meme is getting a bit boring - or they're being serious, in which case the "friends" aren't actually their friends.

Ok, I do need to tone down the hyperbole a bit, but partially, some of them do think Dickens is the greatest thing ever and are prima donnas enough that they would stop talking to me for a week to a month, depending on how serious the debate we would inevitably get into is (they stopped talking to me for a week when I dared suggest that Victor Hugo might be a better writer than Dickens), but this doesn't change the fact that I love them anyway, for all their eccentricities. We just don't talk about these books. That's all.

Hey, no problem, I just worry that people who do these things really have friends that would discard them because of their taste in cartoons or whatever.

I did a whole course at university about Dickens because I love him so much and I still think A Tale of Two Cities is a bit rubbish.

Understood, but, sometimes, if it's about a historical/historical-fiction/anything-like-that fandom, you might get people getting into a huge friendship-ending fight about it: a good friend and I accidentally found each other's politics through a fandom discussion. This ended quite badly with him calling me a "pinko commie bitch" and me calling him "bigoted mother-fucking asshole" with us getting dragged away by our respective friends. We never talked again except to swear at each other under our breath whenever we saw each other.
