116. Why in the world does the hyperbole bother you? The comment of "my friends would never talk to me again" is usually not true, to be sure, but it's an expression of a deep-seated fear of rejection on the part of the secret-writer. Or perhaps they're just using it for impact, or because they feel they have to explain why their secret is a secret. In either case, why does it matter to you?

Having had friends who would really get that upset over something of this sort, and having personally gotten into a huge fight with a very good friend over something in fandom, I can say that it's probably not hyperbole in all cases. People are touchy about the strangest things.

Also, as a note, perhaps it would help you to imagine that fandom is to some people like politics for other people. People who really, passionately care about a subject, a person, a principle - and who simply cannot understand how someone could be so cruel as to differ on the subject. The analogy isn't quite perfect, and I'm sure most people ARE just exaggerating, but in some cases it's an honest complaint (and being stiff and touchy on certain subjects doesn't mean that those people don't deserve friends who like them for a multitude of other reasons!)

And if they are exaggerating for effect - so what? What damage does it do you?

It doesn't, actually. ^^ I'm just loquacious by nature, I really can't help writing four lines for every one thought that I have in my head. (Really helps getting the page number up on those uni papers, though!)

Look, I just think if people have friends that are going really *never going to speak to them again* because of a fandom disagreement, they deserve better friends, that's all.

Well, yeah. No arguing that. But I grew up with so few friends that I once kept a friend for a year that was an absolutely horrible person to me just to know I wasn't alone. So it's not as easy to do as it is to say...(also, what if you're related to the person in question? Can't pick or dump your relatives...)
