I am this person's roommate (HAH) - while our fandoms don't (generally) intersect, we're both LJ roleplayers. We had no idea of this fact until... uh... well, after we'd known each other for a while (I still don't remember how this came up in conversation, actually. No, wait, I think it was becuase I said "hey I have an LJ" and you went "hey I do too" and we friended each other and then I, of course, talked about RP on it and we went "WAIT WHAT"). We met at my local Literary Magazine becuase we really didn't like one of the editors, and discovered we both liked fantasy novels and had an addiction to the interwebs.
Our school is a tiny obscure one in the middle of nowhere. If we found each other without even trying, I'm sure you can too, OP
Other examples: I found my current Dungeon Master and some of my best friends becuase I went on a tour of my college's town on a whim.
Basically, I'd just say go out, attend meetings of clubs that vaguely pique your interests, and don't be afraid to randomly talk to people about stuff. You'll never know what you'll find, and sometimes you'll get exposed to new fandoms (I would not even BE in my current fandom if not for my aforementioned Dungeon Master)
Also college is awesome.
