103: I liked Azula as a character more than just as the villain, but the Avatar writing staff did a great job of making all their antagonists have more depth than 99% of other children's entertainment and the majority of other good vs. evil epics.

158: It's okay. The music itself still gives me the willies when it comes on the radio.

Compared to say, Swiper the Fox or the Anti-fairies, I will give you that Azula is pretty developed.

Compared to other antagonists within her own canon (Long Feng? Long Feng is a chessmaster.) she is flatter than matzo.

And Azula out chessmastered him by letting him think he could manipulate her and then wresting the Dai Li from him in a power bid. You can say it wasn't handled as realistically or it was show more than tell, I've had friends give that as their reason for not liking Azula. Actually my roommate said her trumping Long Feng was a reason she disliked her, because Long Feng was amazing. I personally thought it was handled much better than most villain usurping tropes because Long Feng couldn't last as a villain on par with the Fire Lord and it characterized the turmoil within Ba Sing Se well.

But they put a lot of effort into making her a character that wasn't just evil for evil's sake. She has flaws, she has insecurities, she has moments of hilarious stupidity like in "The Beach" and I thought her mental breakdown at the finale, while pretty rushed, was a wonderful way to show she was a fully realized character you could pity or feel something for her while not taking away the fact that's she really a terrible person. You don't have to like her as a character or as a villain, but I think with all that time spent on her it's not so unreasonable to see why other people would appreciate her story.
