Re: What media have you tried to get into multiple times but just can't?

Most fantasy novels. I've tried LoTR, GoT, Wheel of Time. I just don't like written fantasy.

To be fair, LotR is incredibly dense, GoT is grimdark edgy, and WoT is sexist as hell. Have you tried any more modern fantasy, or is it the "magical fantasy" part that bothers you?

The only fantasy book I can remember enjoying is Rivers of London. I've also tried reading Harry Potter and The Mortal Instruments (I think that was the name) and didn't enjoy either.

Rivers of London does rule

Undiluted pure copaganda from an author who quite clearly loves the taste of jackboot.

Then...maybe you should be looking into that kind of genre (ie urban and modern fantasy) and less classical or big-name fantasy? What you're listing that you didn't like isn't really that representative.

Whenever I've looked for similar things, the suggested lists are always heavy on romance and the Dresden files.

From my current bookshelf, so not an extensive list, but I enjoyed the Raven Boys (YA but fairly grounded modern fantasy) and The Starless Sea.

I love fantasy books and the only one of those series I got through was LotR, and that was for school.

Very glad my school didn't make me read those!

AYRT--tbh I liked the books (and The Hobbit) more than a lot of the other school-assigned stuff.

And I saw you liked Rivers of London, so maybe stay away from pseudo-medieval epic fantasy and stick to more modern and/or funny stuff if you ever give it another go.

I've hated all the things you listed (including below) except LotR (I think I just read it at the right time?). So I also have a hard time finding fantasy books I like even though I love fantastical things? I definitely don't like fantasy novels that are basically romance novels, either.

BUT. I LOVED The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden. There is romance, but it's such a slow burn that you can finish the first book and go "what romance?" Vasya is a girl growing up in a small village in medieval Russia, and she has the second sight, which allows her to see and communicate with all of the spirits that live on the land. And terrible things are starting to happen. It's just a very well thought out world, with satisfying stakes and a wonderfully constructed plot. It also seems to subvert some tropes, but in such a subtle way that you're not beaten over the head with it.

I also really liked The Magicians Trilogy, which sounds like it's going to start Harry Potter-ish, with a magical school, but is more about a fucked up version of Narnia, and the magic that controls the doors between all worlds, and the very few people even amongst magicians, that can slip through the cracks.

I realize you were not asking for recs, lol.
