Being sensitivity reader means making a choice between being poor, and working for free or vastly reduced rates, and knowing that at least you are representing your people and culture well; or; charging ordinary rates and knowing vast scores of people are just going to ignore you and write either to their old prejudices or be taken in by some con artist who will not have your culture's best interests in mind when they spit out any old rubbish, as they refuse to pay out money for assistance. I think, on balance, working for free is probably the better choice there. It sucks, but it at least makes the world a better place. Maybe the government should be the one funding sensitivity guidance just so we can get paid and give authors a free resource to use.

Wait, why would an author listen to someone they're not paying vs someone they are? Or am I misunderstanding?

(Obviously, sounds like you're in this business, so curious as to what you've seen/experienced -- you'd think sensitivity readers would be a boon to writers; I'm fully aware though people are easily dismissed in favor of profit).

All this aside, this really sucks anon. I hope you're able to find work that pays you decently while you're able to contribute to the preservation (and accurate representation) of your culture.

"Wait, why would an author listen to someone they're not paying vs someone they are? Or am I misunderstanding?"
Because money. A lot of authors, especially the pros even more than the amateurs, are really fucking cheap.

I think AYRT is saying that if you try to charge actual money, people won't bother to use your services and instead hire someone cheap but crap or go without, so if you want the job done right you are forced to do it for free.

I feel like this is similar to editing in the sense that... the people who are going to use the service know your worth and are willing to pay it, and the people who don't give a shit will not be enticed even by free services.
