(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Brandon Sanderson. his name is in the secret...

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but who the hell is Sanders Brandonson anyway?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
A very popular fantasy writer.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)

AYRT
That doesn't mean that I or anyone else has heard of him before.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
There's this nifty thing called Google. You could try using it sometime.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Every secret is about SOMETHING and most of the time the subject isn't even named in the secret! Here, you have the subject's name in the secret and Google exists. He's also one of the biggest names in fantasy currently so if you read books how can you not have at least heard of him taking over Wheel of Time ffs...

Some people get a weird bug up their ass over people daring to post secrets about things they aren't personally interested in.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Normally I'd tell the people who are telling you to Google the guy that they should try engaging you in conversation about the guy, but I'm not really sure you're that interested in conversation about the guy.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I’d usually agree. Sometimes Google can’t give as much details as a person in the know, which people in this thread could be, including OP obviously. But when you simply ask “who the fuck is this?”, that really is an honestly rather dumb question meant for Google. Maybe if they had asked in a more reasonable way?

The son of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel can't you use context clues and read???

I said this in response to the secret thread but he's quite literally not forcing anyone to get anything as these books will eventually be available for purchase like his other books. And he doesn't say anything in that kickstarter about looking good by cutting out publishers, just that its easier to set his prices for bundles and ~swag boxes.

I'll also say that the ebooks are $40 total, and that's how much you'd have to pay for some of his ebooks now, and his premium hardcover (faux leather I guess) is $40 each which is also not a crazy price and in line with his other books so I'll admit I don't get your embarrassment or what's not a good look.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, $40 is normal hardcover price these days, let alone premium. Anyone who wants the books at release date is paying pretty much exactly what they would for a traditional release, unless they are going for the big swag boxes. Which aren't my thing, but also aren't actually uncommon for popular authors - big book releases have been getting a merch push for ages.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Damn, books are crazy expensive is what I'm getting from all of this.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, but *then* you add the shipping costs. For anyone outside of the US they are pretty astronomical, particularly when you also have to pay import duty on top of that for each book.

The shipping costs are flat rate for every non-US country and priced less than his store, you can literally get the ebooks, which are drm-free, and again, you can wait until they are traditionally sold. I don't know, I'm not seeing it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-14 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
So what if they are a flat rate, they pretty much double the cost of the kickstarter for anyone who wants something tangible, rather than eBooks. I like special editions, I like swag...but it's just not do-able for me or a lot of people who won't be able to scrape together the $920 the full bundle plus shipping costs by the end of the month, plus whatever nasty extra import fees and taxes get tacked on when each monthly bundle comes in.

you not being able to afford what something costs does not mean the kickstarter is embarassing or not a good look or that you would pay less without the kickstarter for a subscription box. hth.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly just like it because I trust Sanderson to actually finish his shit and the ebook pack is cheaper than purchasing them as they come out lmao

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's interesting to me just as an indicator of how weird the publishing market is, or I guess more accurately, how weird the self-funding process is compared to traditional financing models and how it seems like it's just obviously going to take over from the existing model for a lot of already-established creators with large nerd fan followings.

You look at the mainstream publishing model on the one hand, and then you look at the number of people who are actively enthusiastic about paying Sanderson hundreds or thousands of dollars on the other, and it just feels like these things do not add up.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I'm surprised more big name authors haven't gone this route, but I guess it could be potentially awkward for them to disrupt long-established relationships with their agents and publishers, even if they weren't actively under contract. I know some authors have publicly stated that they're not interested in doing this because they don't want to handle the nitty gritty details like book cover design, formatting, marketing, etc. themselves but you know, I figure Sanderson could outsource that pretty easily with that kickstarter money.

I saw it, looked into it, realised, I've never read any of his books and wasn't willing to put out nearly $200 for 4 books and 8 swag boxes from an author I've never read and may not even like.

Still, he definitely has his rabid fans, which is why it skyrocketed so quickly. Would not be surprised if it broke $30mil by the time it was done.
