It's probably because Aang has a personality that's more child-like, and Toph is more, well, tough. So people can't pull away from the "OMG HE'S JUST A KID" thing (even though at the end of the series I'd say he's pretty fuckin' grown up). Or, you know, they're that crazy kind of shipper or something.

"I like Toph" = WELL WHO WOULDN'T SHE'S AWESOME
"I like Aang" = OMG U PEDOOOO

Either way, it's really fucktarded and I think people need to get slapped up side the head.

/defensive of Aang

The way people act towards Aang's character is a big reason why this fandom is such a turn off to me now. They want him to be some super-being killer, it is a crime for him to be more appealing than Zuko or at least on the same level of appeal, and he also had the audacity to be liked by Katara.

So now anyone who admits to liking Aang or thinking he's cute or even daring to admit they find him attractive is suddenly labeled a pedophile or mocked. Meanwhile we have people who lust after 14 year old Katara, 12 year old Toph, and fangirls who dream of screwing Zuko and have built him up to this ridiculous ideal.

Aang was one of the better characters, IMO. After re-watching the series again and ignoring the fandom while doing it, it certainly made me view it with different eyes and a fresher opinion.

YES. Avatar fandom is just full of utter fail most of the time. I cannot understand how so much hatred is rampant, especailly for Aang.

But I have this theory that it's because he's lighthearted and goofy. Not goofy like Sokka, where there's cynical sarcasm attached. Aang is sweet and pure most of the time, except when it comes to srs bizniz, and I think that because he's not angsty and full of woe like the fandom-favorite Zuko, he gets more hate. I'm all for dark and complex, but some people think there needs to be strife in everything. And I just don't understand that. ):

Anyone who thinks liking Aang makes you a pedophile just is stupid, period. And so much double-standards abound: 14 year old Katara is a sexually mature girl who loves to bang 15 year old Zuko, but Aang can't kiss a girl because he's 12. Yeeeeeah, okay. ~~learn some shit about human sexuality plz~~

/tldr

I liked Zuko at first too. And then I re-watched the series and ignored the fandom and I found Aang to be a more appealing character precisely because he isn't this woeful, angsty character. I had been following the pack when in reality, I didn't really care too much for the angsty character. There is so much angst in this world and whiny, complaining people. Aang was kind of like a breath of fresh air.

Honestly, I think Aang had alot more to be angsty about - his whole entire culture and family and friends had been KILLED. He had the task of saving the world within a short period of time. Everyone was counting on him. He had more reason to crack. Not saying that Zuko didn't have his share of problems, but in comparison, I think his problems come up just a bit short.

But Aang never complained or whined or was horrible to the people around him. He was still carefree and generally angst-free. Sure, he had doubts and lack of strength about it several times in the show, but he always picked himself back up and was determined to make things better without wallowing in too much self-hate and pity. That's what I really loved about him.
