Startide Rising, a novel in David Brin's Uplift series.

If what I have heard from various sources is correct... well, humans eventually "uplift" chimps and bottlenose dolphins via genetic manipulation, giving them that last push toward sapience, then all three species head into the stars together.

It turns out that uplifting is extremely common among aliens, to the point that there are no known species that didn't have a patron to uplift them - except humans. Humans also don't follow the custom of uplifters enslaving upliftees for thousands of years. Thus, Earthclan - humans and their upliftees, dolphins and chimps - are treated as pariahs in galactic civilization.

The Uplift series was one of the first to play with the whole "aliens grant sapience" trope - I think it may have even invented the term "uplift" for it.

As for why I'm ambivalent about buckling down and reading it despite the influence... well, Ecco the Dolphin was one of my favourite game series, and Brin was an accessory to its murder. He was hired to write the plot of the 3D game when he hadn't even heard of the series before; his plot took what was a beautifully strange tale about a dolphin with dolphiny problems that had ended in a cliffhanger into yet another story about humans aligning with fellow sapients.

I'd just about forgiven it as "hey, it was money for him" when I found out that the dude had confused the Genesis games with "his". Based on a blog post Google told me about, he thought some game he'd written for called Ecco the Dolphin had made it to the Wii Virtual Console. I knew he probably didn't give one iota of shit for the series, but Jesus Christ.

It opened some old wounds.

Ah. Thanks.

Hm, that's a whole lot of Do Not Know If Want right there. I'm really interested in animal cognition, so it could either be lots of fun or, if it's a case of Did Not Do The Research, a complete wall-banger for me.

You'd probably be better off prodding someone who has actually read the books and isn't bitter about the author definitely not doing the research for another work. :)

...I can definitely recommend the original Ecco games? They're old and very hard, but it's very worth it. Some of the best non-human fiction out there if you ask me.
