I thought SakuIno was a popular Naruto ship. It was when I was into Naruto, and it's one of my favorites. Other femslash ships are possible, but the other female characters don't exactly interact. You can say "but what about popular slash ship where the guys don't interact!" but those are actually pretty rare there's only a few across all fandoms to pick from for these whataboutisms.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
SakuIno is the most popular femslash pairing in Naruto, yeah. It's just not nearly as popular as most of the slash or het ships. But then, both Ino and Sakura are pretty polarizing characters and a lot of people hate them.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's really whataboutism to point out that, say, KakaIru (who don't interact) has five times as much fic on AO3 as SakuIno has. It's just acknowledging that like most fandoms, the Naruto fandom as a whole isn't as into femslash as they are into slash. That said, I don't think this means people are morally obligated to also ship random female characters together.

There's unfortunately a difference between available femslash and fandom's willingness to write femslash.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Fans are under no obligation to write femslash if they don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Show me where I said that.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
You talk about fandom's willingness to write femslash, which implies that you think they should be writing it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Wanting fans to write more femslash does not mean you think they're obliged to do so.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Typically it means they think "Oh yes, of course nobody is obligated to write femslash, other girls are free to be misogynist cock-worshippers all they want, it's just sad that we progressive lady-lovers don't get anything, uwu"

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't.

Bro I just want to read about my favorite ladies getting eaten out every now and then, calm down.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
You're very defensive, sunshine. Maybe drink a glass of water and calm down.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT It would be nice if fandoms wrote more femslash in general, sure, but no, no one should be obliged to do so. Believe me, I'm well aware most people in fandom aren't into it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
It absolutely does not imply that. You’re making this shit up as you go to pretend you have a point.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it does.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It really doesn’t.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
They didn’t say that, and you know it. Coming in here with a chip on your shoulder for no reason, and transparently acting in bad faith don’t make you look good. Everyone can see through what you’re trying to do.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
True.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who likes to read Naruto fics (especially fix it fics and gen fics), but isn't a SakuIno fan, it's a couple things

1. The fandom only really cares about SakuIno

2. Eh, not enough of the women really have deep or even good surface-level relationships compared to other shonen things I consume for me to even be too hard on the fandom

(and before you are like "well you read gen; haha, there's a lot of mlm and SakuIno in gen. Gen just means the main plot isn't a relationship)

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, yeah, it's frustrating when people are only about a ship that isn't quite your thing. So close, and yet so far...

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Listen, as someone who WROTE a significant chunk of Naruto femslash, there was vanishingly little of it compared to the behemoth sizes of the het and slash sides of the fandom. Also a lot of it was bad. Femslash Naruto was dudebro-dominated and while I did make some friends, I also got comments asking for really specific porn all the time despite the fact that I rarely wrote anything explicit. Really made you feel appreciated as a writer.

And if you wanted to go beyond InoSaku, which I did, you really had to reach because goddamn these women rarely interacted in any meaningful way in the source material.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-18 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
It was dudebro dominated, yeah. Thinkin about my male friend who wrote PWP Sakura/Hinata porn and when one of our other female friends started reading Naruto and said she liked Sasuke/Naruto, he got huffy and said he was disappointed in her because that ship was "OOC." Because Sakura and Hinata would believably fuck each other but Sasuke and Naruto wouldn't.

It was peak r/menwritingwomen all day every day while I was there. Honestly, the top femslash ship was probably not even Sakura/Ino, but fem!Naruto/Female Character using the Sexy Jutsu.

That said, it does seem like the fandom has changed since the days when the manga was still being released and more voices have entered the femslash writing space since. I checked for recs out of curiosity just now and found some interesting lists. So good for people who still want to read Naruto fics.

I must admit that when I made this secret I had the fan art community in mind moreso than the fanfic side (particularly on certain spaces on tumblr and DeviantArt - particularly DA which had groups that had managed to be fetish-free thanks to diligent moderators before the site started to really go down hill after recent updates) - which admittedly was pretty dumb in hindsight since there's probably more fanfic folk here than fan artists lol.

And yeah all the dudebro contributions X_X there's a handful I found that I had liked, but you do have to swim through the majority of that fun brand of smut to find them.
