I think the recommenders may have confused the book with the Disney adaptation. There is a sense of humour in the book, but it is a dark, gallows, bit absurdist type of humour. It is not light, frothy, fun-time humour.

I like the design of this secret. We need more verticality in our secrets. Everybody get on that.

Sympathies, OP. It's a horrible book.

I love the book but wow, it isn't fun! Even the parts with Wart that were adapted into the Disney movie are scary and weird.

I know I read this one because of X-Men 2 but I don't remember what actually happened in it.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the secret, but I love your profile pics! The Havoc ones especially are appreciated, as he’s my fave!

One of the things I've always loved about it is that is what I felt was a balance between some wit, some humor, and yes a somewhat grim view of humanity and LOTS of political allegory. (It ain't subtle - in the original illustrations for "Sword in the Stone" - the 'lighter' shorter version - there's both a swastika and a hammer and sickle to make sure we all know what the moral "might isn't right" refers to) So yes, anyone selling it as ONLY 'charming and fun' is missing the point - it's as charming and fun as a story about a ruler coming to terms with power and trying hard but fucking up can possibly be.
When I first read the "Sword in the Stone" as a kid (8-ish) the allegory wooshed right over my head and I just enjoyed it as a magical fun tale. Then at 11 I read "Once and Future King" because I wanted MORE and it was like being hit with a ton of bricks. Like: OH. THAT is what it means to be turned into an ant. That is WHY Merlin turns Wart into an Ant. A great deal about the book is stark and uncomfortable. Despite that, I DO have a soft spot for the characters, for the voice, for the why those uncomfortable topics are handled, for how even characters we like and are the usual "heroes" are shown to be also flawed and imperfect...
