I liked him okay, but would have liked him much better if they hadn't gone off on the weirdo 'gets addicted to drugs' tangent and 'falls in love only to have her immediately killed' tangent, and everything else they could possibly throw at the character to make him super-uber-woobie. It just got...annoying. Can't we have a socially awkward, smart, geeky character who is just...happy being that way? And doesn't have to have a dark past, or overwhelming angst, or any of that other nonsense?

Not OP - I get where you're coming from with this, I really do... but good lord, a smart character that looks like MGG, gets whumped, has issues, and has a dark past? That sounds like everything I've ever wanted and your comment is making me wish I was remotely interested in Criminal Minds. Lol.

Yeah. And I mean, I can see how all of that could be done in an obnoxious way, too. I kind of love when characters have deep emotional pain, but the quality of the writing counts for a lot. And killing his LI probably would piss me off.

Not all whump is created equal. :P

YES. I liked Reid very much (maybe not as much as fandom) but his story arc was just unbearable.

Right? At a certain point, *all* of the arcs were just....bah. I was so done. That and the endless rape/mutilation/murder that they focused on (visually) way too fucking much.

There is fandom outside of him. I think it's pretty much all Hotchner/Reader or Emily/JJ so if you like those, you're golden. Personally I think it's not great. But it does exist.

Or you can just enjoy the show without the fandom. As I really don't ship anyone (other than the canon JJ/Will ship I like the existence of but don't want to read fics for), I really don't feel the need for the fandom. I just enjoy the show as its own thing.

Yeah, that's fair. Although, I think even in that scenario, which is what I mostly do - you can still wish that there was a fandom that was producing the kind of fic you wanted.

The thing that really annoys me about Reid fics is when they have him as a woobie victim of childhood, usually sexual, abuse (which is entirely possible given his backstory and nothing that would bother me in a woobie fic usually) and they have *Morgan* comforting him and trying hard to understand. Morgan, the canonical victim of childhood sexual abuse. But I guess he's a big, handsome, strong, black guy, so that doesn't count?

Yeah, I love Reid, but it would be nice to have some actual conversation about the rest of the team, too, that doesn't involve a debate over whether or not people liked x female character (I've lost count of how many times I've had the reaction of, "Wow, you don't like Elle/JJ/Blake/Seaver/etc.? That's SUCH a new opinion, I've never heard anyone say that before!"). Or why Morgan was so rude to Hotch and/or Reid. Or "JJ rolled her eyes at Redd, she's so mean!" Or other various things of that sort. I'd love to have more conversation about the characters' backstories and roles on the team and whatnot. But a lot of people don't seem all that interested in that kind of conversation.

Its weird but when it comes to this show and SVU I often want to see stuff about certain victims, perps and follow up of an episode's story. But it's all 99-100% "personal drama of the officers/investigators". I guess I can get that because they are the mains. But idk I just feel weird and wish someone else was interested enough in one off episode characters to write about them.

I'm so glad he's not coming back for the reboot. If only Hotch'd come back it'd be perfect. 😢
