I'm always torn with these reviews. On the one hand, I did find Captain Marvel boring, and I don't personally think it was very good. I don't think it was hot trash, but I did find myself wishing it were shorter about 60 minutes into seeing it for the first time in theater.

But OTOH, the majority of youtubers who care enough to make a whole video criticizing it seem to be dudes who are angry at the existence of feminism. So I generally avoid Captain Marvel videos with negative taglines (such as the one in the secret), despite the fact that there are plenty of things about the movie I'm critical of myself.

Yeah, I'm not nostalgic for the nineties, a fan of Top Gun, or a fan of uncanny valley CGId youthening effects, so the movie was definitely not for me (and I'm fine with that). But damn, a lot of a angry white dudes got super-duper angry over it.

It wasn't just white dudes, it was dudes in general.

Right? Always with the insistence that misogyny is somehow stopped by skin colour...

I also found Captain Marvel rather dull and disappointingly under developed even for a MCU film, but that might be partly because fandom gushing raised my expectations even though I tried not to. That said, I think a lot of the frothy outrage came from a place of sexism.

Fandom has a habit of overhyping media neckbeards hate. The gushing over Ghostbusters (2016) is a perfect example.

This is 90 percent of reviews by dude YouTubers with every new movie or show about a woman that isn't very good. It's so frustrating. I like to see a good, entertaining dunk of a bad movie, but not if most of your hot takes come down to "thing bad because women! 🤣"

On second thought, it's not just dudes either. A lot of female reviewers do it too, and usually add on something to make them sound like they're the real feminists and the movie's problem isn't women or feminism, it's just "bad" feminism.
