In addition to the painkillers? And weeping? Well:
Not going to lie, when the back pain gets super bad I will sleep in the bathtub. Waking up periodically because the water needs to be switched for more hot is infinitely better than not finding a comfortable position or having to get up and move to reheat ricebags. [I can't recommend this if you have nervous housemates - only thing worse than waking up because the water got cold is waking up because someone's screaming in a panic because they think you'll drown somehow]
If it's only a bit bad I can get away with the ricebag or, my new favorite thing, hot-pepper containing ointment that warms oh so nice.
