i feel that way about most generic 'fantasy realism' if thats a thing. i can't stand ffxiv either for the same reason. anime characters pasted onto a generic fantasy realism world

i love the art of fantasy worlds that have their own unique style that doesn't try to be 'realistic' though. or does 'realism' with their own flair like borderlands

It's got all the worst parts of late Victorian and Gothic architecture slapped together with a ghoulish excess that borders on Mannerism. It looks exactly like what someone who wasn't familiar with European design would create- a nonsensical, McMansion-esque charnel house. And what's weird is that I don't think any of that was necessarily intentional, either. A lot of it's gaudiness comes from in-game assets being re-used too often. But I cringe when I look at it too, OP.
(I think From Software fell off the wagon after it's Otogi games, tbh. Those had a more cohesive design aesthetic)

I’d say the recent FromSoft game with the best aesthetic was Sekiro. Which proves the point, since it got away from pseudo-Europe.

Elden Ring looks like an xbox 360 game with a shinier coat.

Nikolaus Pevsner who wrote "The Buildings of England" would call it "busy". That word as used by him says much in little.
