Yeah, but they do explain why these characters and historical figures are there in the Fate series. They’re not just hanging around with no context or explanation given, like Ayrt was talking about. They might still enjoy the Fate series anyway, I know I do, but it’s not really an example of what they were talking about.

I guess but lbr the explanation from Fate is, like, historical figures are cute anime girls and they fight and MAGIC. That's not much better than no context.

I mean, the context is “heroes from folklore and history are summoned to battle for the holy grail”. That’s pretty solid context, and it is definitely better than no context. I don’t get why you’re framing the premise as nonsense that’s “not much better than no context” when a battle royale between legendary figures is pretty understandable and not a far fetched concept for modern fantasy. It wasn’t that out there of a concept even when it was released in 2004, before there was half a dozen retreads of it.

And they’re not all girls, just because there is some gender flipping. There’s entire series separate of Fate that flip the genders of every character into cute anime girls, so the fact that Fate isn’t just anime girls is something. I’m not going to pretend the explanations for the gender flipping aren’t flimsy. But at least they’re all different from each other, and they give some explanation I guess?

I meant the explanations for why their genders are flipped are all different from each other, not just some single explanation for every one of them. I didn’t mean every single servant is unique in and of themselves. I may be a Fate fan, but I know that’s not true. Especially in Fate/Grand Order.

That's still an excuse plot as far as I can see. And let's not kid ourselves, they might not ALL be cute girls but the franchise leans real hard into parading cute girls. The core fandom is in it for waifus, as the massive hentai offerings and merchandising sector would show.

But what’s the problem with excuse plots in this regard? This kind of feels like splitting hairs. It’s a plot that many find interesting, and it’s open to infinite possibilities. I don’t see what’s so context-less about it that makes it an excuse plot, or why that term is relevant here. Pretty much all plots are excuses in some way? I don’t know, I’m just not seeing what’s wrong with the plot, especially for the original Fate/Stay Night, where I feel like the plot is the strongest and most cohesive.

I won’t dispute the second point, there is leaning into waifu culture amongst male otakus. It wasn’t that way at the start in FSN, at least not to as shameless a degree, but it didn’t take long for that to change. And it had been that way even before FGO made it blatant.
