Ah, you'd be missing out in my opinion. The romance in The Mystic Nine is spectacular, especially when this character gets taken out of commission and his girlfriend gets to take over and rescue him. Also, their chemistry is super hot, and their first encounters are amazing (she's dressed up as a man, three piece suit and hat and everything).

I'm just not interested in romance, and het romance even less so... I'll pass. But it's lovely you have fun with it! It's just a matter of personal taste, that's all.

NAYRT

But that meet cute is right up my alley!!! I love the whole woman cross dressing trope.

****SPOILERS AHEAD****

nayrt but I wanted to add some spoiler-filled caution - The romance between Fo Ye and Xinyue is cute, but I was disappointed that it drags in the middle. I like Zhao Li Ying as an actress and thought she'd have a bigger role in the series but after their initial meeting and she returns with him to Changsha, she just sort of... hangs around his house and doesn't do much except wait for him to come back from his adventures? That was a let down because she was so awesome and dynamic of a character initially and had so much unfulfilled potential. (But honestly, this seems to be a Thing with cdramas and female lead roles.) But yeah... their chemistry was adorable and rather hot.

I also didn't want to rec the romance in Mystic Nine because the whole Er Ye/Ya Tou thing dragged on FOREVER, even after she passed away. I was honestly relieved when she died because it was taking up so much time in the plot and then Er Ye's grieving and Chen Pi's creepy obsession with her took up the rest of the damn series.

I'd say intense love and crushing loyalty and the terror of death are major themes of the show, though?

Though it's true, since we don't meet Ya Tou until she's very sweet and very dying, it's a bit hard to bond with her. Sometimes she's more of a plot device than a person.

There's reinforcing a theme, and then there's... playing the exact same flashback montage a thousand times. I liked Ya Tou and I started out liking Er Ye but by the end I was groaning every time he was onscreen because his character development basically stalled out and was replaced by that bloody flashback montage while other women inexplicably threw themselves at him.

Well, fair.
