Media you enjoy but don't do fandom for

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've realized there's somethings I just don't want to do fandom for. Like I want read or watch or listen to it, maybe share pieces I enjoyed with other fans, but I don't want to read fic, I don't want to do meta, I don't really want to do the online thing for them.

So, I guess 2 questions
:What does fandom usually mean to you (that is, to 'be' in a fandom)
:: And what are the works that you don't treat that way?

My usual "I'm in fandom" is reading and writing fic, maybe spending money on a thing or two? But I guess it's really fic consumption and fantasies in my head (essentially self inserts).

Some fandoms I simply enjoy the works, and would love to discuss with people IRL and I guess online, but just discussion and casual "squee", not heavy duty I'm gonna pass out fangirling: Lord of the Rings; a fair amount of anime/manga, most recently Noragami; certain podcasts like Tanis or the Tower 5 (whatever that one's called) -- even WtNV back in the day (it was kind of a comfort listen to me, tbh), that Sylvia Moreno García book (I just want some more ancient god/human girl falling in love + cultural context), really, a lot of books.

What about you?

Basically any "Real Person" Fandom, like bands, actors, Let's Players, etc. The closest I get to Fandom is seeing the odd piece of Fanart pop up on random occasions.

For me, being a part of a fandom requires actively searching for or creating related material such as fanworks, merch, critic essays, whatever. You can be a fan and not be a part of a fandom; fandom is the community-focused aspect of being a fan of something.

With that said, I am a fan of Wrath James White but have no desire to engage with other people over his books. Also adore Genocyber, Ogre Slayer, and other hyperviolent anime titles but they aren't something I wish to interact with others over beyond occasional text posts such as this one.

I think there's some media that is "just fine the way it is" and so I don't have any desire to seek out more, aside from someone to discuss it with maybe. I can't exactly say "didn't leave any questions" because well, X-Files was like that for me, and um. Noooo, no unanswered questions there... In some cases I like the not knowing.

Then there's a lot of stuff I might be "in fandom" for if there WAS a fandom, or if there is, if someone directed me to it - but I'm not so fixated on it (unlike other small fandoms which I am) that I feel a need to make stuff that only I'm ever going to see.

And as previously noted, musicians. I listen to a lot of them. I couldn't tell you all the members' names in most of the bands, or pick them out of a police lineup. I just like the music.

I’m someone that’s in a good amount of fandoms, and I have been every since I discovered fandom ages ago. But I have more pieces of media that I love but am not in the fandom for than media I love and am in the fandom for.

It sometimes feels like it’s random which things I join the fandoms for, because it seems like it can be a bit unpredictable.

I think for me, it really comes down to how much I like a ship, character, plot, and setting, and how I want to see/read more of it. And how much I want to discuss and squee with others about it. But sometimes I just read a good fic, see a good piece of fanart, see an cool video, see an interesting fandom discussion, or have/make a friend who’s also a fan of this something, and that interests me enough to push into joining the fandom, even if I had no prior interest in doing anything but loving the media by myself. It sparks an interest to be part of this fandom that looks so much fun.

For me it's Hannibal (show). I enjoy the funny memes and the occasional fanart but I stay away from discussions and fic and I also do not need a 4th season tbh.
