Not the OP, but I remember reading about it (though I haven't watched this show, so I don't know how accurate this article is):

Thank you, this was a really good article!

Having watched both seasons, to address the Duke's dad thing, I think they cast Simon's actor not thinking of the implications of his skin colour when it came to his dad, and you can't really change his dad because the way his dad treats him is LITERALLY the whole push for how he acts/not wanting to marry/have kids, etc.

There was also a really good comment about Marina's storyline too. If they had made her darker there would have been the gross implications of 'black girl trapping a white boy into marriage', and the commenter was right that it was definitely a damned if you do/don't situation there.

I'll admit that I don't know if these issues really get 'fixed' in the second season, because while the three main women (Kate, Edwina, their mom) are all darker skinned Indian women, I don't know if there's the same amount of colourism when it comes to Indian people that there is with black people? I know it's definitely there to some degree, but I am not the right person to do that sort of comparison/analysis.

Mostly because I'm so white my recommended shade of tinted moisturizer was called 'Finland'.

There's an insane amount of colorism in India. You just have to look at the legacy of Ponds' face cream there.

Oh absolutely. I teach kindergarten and the weather has been rather sunny lately. Yesterday I got an email from an Indian parent, asking me to remind their daughter to apply sunscreen regularly because they didn't want her skin to get too dark...
