Echoing what many have said, I think a lot of songs are just over dramatic and hyperbolic. I think they take the minute sentiments and exacerbate them. Small fixations made grand scale.

There are some love songs I think are really great and don't fall into the trap of over dramatic feels -- Lucius' cover of "Right Down the Line" and Fleetwood Mac's "Birdsong" come to mind. In terms of wanting to feel that way about somebody, I really enjoy Mary J. Blige's "Real Love". I don't think any of them exaggerate the feelings too much (and Birdsong is actually about the band members-- so love amongst friends; and personally I felt the second verse of Right Down the Line applied to a friendship of mine before I figured out it was a love song)

You have me curious to check out that "Right Down the Line" cover now :). I like that song.
