The opposite for me. Unhealthy situations and revenge is what I look for in my Cnovels and Cdramas. However I do hate when the retaliation is too cold hearted. Torturing rivals is not ok no matter how unsymphathetic they're.

I haven't watched that many cdramas where this happens but the retaliation is rarely what I'd consider "mild". It seems to be over the top more often than not.

Yep! Acomplice servants? Drink the poison! Evil second wife? Killed along with her family when their evil deeds are revealed.

I like when the stakes are high and the evil is truly evil but I like my MCs to be better than their enemies.

I haven't watched Cdramas for many months. Waiting for a new batch to be fully translated...

For me, it's not even about revenge and punishing the evil characters, it's more that the evil female characters are kind of insane in how far they go. Poison, murder, framing someone and landing them in prison/danger of capital punishment, etc. planned because the guy you love doesn't love you back? Ugh, no thanks. I really dislike seeing women fighting over a man like this, and so often the man isn't even worth it.

I... think it's less that the 'jealous, murderous woman' trope exists, for me, but how it's executed.

One drama I watched, it took about half of the entire story for her to get that far, and you could see all the little pinpricks and frustrations and overwhelming pressure she was under before she flipped. So when she did, it really was a tragedy.

Other dramas... the plot needs a villain so they just make one of the woman Crazy Jealous and don't bother much with why, and it tends to fall a bit flat.


But also, I can see why someone might want to avoid the theme entirely.

I wouldn't mind it so much done as a proper character development arc, but so far I haven't really seen that. It's the second example I see too much of, and it's usually some love triangle where the ML loves the FL but there's another female character who's always loved the ML and gets psycho jealous and tries to take it out on the FL in rather extreme ways, and this cycle is repeated a few times. It's boring as well as plain old disturbing, and I don't really enjoy seeing characters suffer like that.

I was gonna say, isn't that sort of a staple of Cdramas in general, not just with female characters?

The idea of revenge in general, sure. But I'm talking about a very specific type of female-on-female cruelty that's just too much for me.

I don't mind female-on-female toxicity in harem dramas, as it's kind of necessary and makes sense for that genre?

But it's boring and hard to watch in every other genre. Not every story needs these female rival characters who try to make the life of the female lead difficult at every turn just because they're into the same guy. Recently, I finished a short webdrama where all the female rivals became the main girl's friends instead. This is what I want to see more of.
