I can't think of any off the top of my head that I liked BETTER than the original, but I have to give the TOS->AOS reboot a tip of the hat for how they did it. Instead of just "we're rewriting the same story but with modern actors/writing!" they made a canon AU. It's a great idea. Doesn't take anything away from the original, but you have two different versions of "canon" timeline and characterization to play around with (and mix and match!).

I remember actually being like "wtf is this?!" until somewhere during the Academy scenes where I turned to my partner in the theater and was like "omg this is A CANON COLLEGE AU!" and everything was much more enjoyable after that. :D

I was wary until I actually watched the movies, and ended up enjoying them a lot!

Yeah, I wasn't expecting to really like it either going in. Mostly figured I'd see it out of appreciation for the fact it got a bunch of awesome people I knew from other fandoms to start watching TOS and writing about characters I already loved. But they were pretty darned good in their own right, which was a nice surprise.

(Except you, Into Darkness. >:|)

It's still shocking just how bad Into Darkness was. Such a disaster.
